A trend line is simply any line drawn over the price action of a chart in order to try and determine the direction and shape of the general trend. They differ from support and resistance lines in that they’re not drawn horizontally on the chart but move diagonally, attempting to follow the prevailing trend either up or down. Ascending and descending triangles and wedges are good examples of trendlines used by technical analysts to try and understand where the price is likely to go as well as the path of least resistance.
