Short Position

Back to Glossary

A short position, short selling, or to ‘go short’, is the practice of borrowing an asset from a broker in order to sell it. The reason a trader would do this, is if they had an expectation that the asset is due to fall in value, allowing the trader to purchase back the quantity they borrowed for less, cover their debt and keep the profits.
