Kiwi

Back to Glossary

Kiwi is the nickname that traders use to refer to the New-Zealand dollar. It originates from New-Zealand’s national bird, the kiwi, which is also found on one side of the country’s $1 coin. The national bird of New Zealand was reintroduced to the country in 1985 when the coins came into circulation. New Zealanders love kiwi coins and in fact, they were the reason for the reintroduction of the bird, as it has been absent for more than three centuries. The New Zealand dollar was originally a British pound coin and was known as the New Zealand dollar until 1974 when a change of its name became necessary to avoid confusion with the British pound.
