Front Running

Back to Glossary

Front running is a disreputable practice involving insiders acting in their personal interests over those of their clients. A brokerage can act in its own interests by placing orders in advance of a large trade that it knows is going to be made and that will likely affect the price of the underlying asset. When a financial analyst purchases securities in advance of giving them a buy rating this is also known as front running.
